Our story

Cafe Sør is an iconic place, right in the heart of Oslo. A café, lunch place and cocktail bar
– but still so much more than that:
a place where people from
different backgrounds meet to celebrate the diversity of Oslo.

Cafe Sør has meant a lot to many people, both guests and employees. There is a lot of history within our walls. Some people have gotten our logo tattooed, and some have even requested getting married at our bar! It’s not because we are very hip or trendy, but because Cafe Sør is an inclusive community where everyone is met with respect.

Cafe Sør was created as an inclusive arena long before diversity became a hot topic. Our goal was not to be the bar with the most cocktails or to make the most money. Our goal was to create a place with a positive atmosphere and good vibes. This mindset has stood the test of time, and after more than 20 years in Torggata, we are still a preferred hang-out for young people in Oslo.

Our venue is located in Strøget in Torggata. After many replacements in Strøget, the "stayers" chose to join forces to breathe life into this partly hidden gem. Strøget Association was established in 2015 to coordinate activities in Strøget.

The founder and owner Laurent Vacarisas' personal commitment has contributed to the renewal of Strøget through new start-ups. In addition, he has supported many aspiring artists. Cafe Sør was one of the first places in Oslo to have DJs every single night, and many of Oslo's DJs have turned discs on Café Sør stage.

To everyone who has ever stopped by Cafe Sør, whether you had a drink, danced salsa, performed your music, had a business meeting or just hung out:

THANK YOU!
